Friedrichswerder ist einer der ältesten Stadtteile in Berlins historischer Mitte und wurde im Jahr 1662 als Wohngebiet für höhere Hofbeamte gegründet. Im Laufe der Jahrhunderte entwickelte sich das Quartier von einem vornehmen Wohngebiet zu einem pulsierenden Geschäftsviertel. Karl Friedrich Schinkel errichtete die neue Friedrichswerdersche Kirche und die Bauakademie, wodurch ein einzigartiger Stadtraum in direkter Nähe zum Berliner Stadtschloss entstand.

Ab der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts veränderte sich das Bild des Quartiers erneut. Zu Gunsten von Erweiterungsbauten der Reichsbank wurde die historische Kleinteiligkeit aufgegeben, Hotels und Banken siedelten sich an.

Der Zweite Weltkrieg zerstörte einen Großteil der Bebauung – über 50 Jahre lag ein exklusiver Stadtraum brach. Mit dem Einzug des Auswärtigen Amtes 1999 in das Gebäude der ehemaligen Reichsbank belebte sich das Viertel wieder. Ab 2005 wird Friedrichswerder wieder zu einem exklusiven Wohnquartier: zwischen Gendarmenmarkt und Auswärtigem Amt, nächstgelegen zur Friedrichstraße und Unter den Linden – in der Mitte der historischen Innenstadt – mitten in Berlin.

zoom picture		 Established in 1662 as a residential area for the higher court officials, Friedrichswerder is one of the oldest parts of the historic Berlin-Mitte district. In the centuries that followed, this locality was transformed from a well-to-do residential area into a thriving business location. Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the early 19th century Prussian architect, contributed to this unique location close to the Berliner Stadtschloss (the Berlin city palace) by building the new Friedrichswerder church and the Bauakademie there.

This location changed its appearance yet again in the second half of the 19th century. The historical parcelling off of this location into small areas was abandoned in favour of extending the buildings belonging to the Reichsbank (the bank of the first German Reich); this in turn led to hotels and banks setting up their premises there.

A large part of the area was destroyed during The Second World War – and this exclusive city location lay waste for over fifty years. When the Foreign Ministry moved into the former Reichsbank building in 1999 this location was given a new lease of life. From 2005 onwards, Friedrichswerder will become an exclusive residential area once more, located as it is between the Gendarmenmarkt and the Foreign Ministry, near Friedrichstraße and Unter den Linden – in the middle of the historical city centre – in the middle of Berlin.
